About City Merchant City. Glasgow's favourite seafood restaurant.
The City Merchant Restaurant was established in 1988, by the Matteo Family, one of the first, in the Merchant City area, and was extended and upgraded in 1996, offering an extensive variety of local and exotic fish and shellfish.
Situated 5 minutes from George Square and only a few hundred yards from Glasgow's original dwellings on the Clyde, prosperous merchants of the 17th and 18th centuries built their mansions in what is now known as the Merchant City. As time passed, they moved to the more fashionable suburbs and the west end.
The City Fathers then developed their fish and fruit markets, and of course warehouses and manufacturing businesses prospered as well as inns and howffs - some of notorious ill-repute! As traffic congestion and noise increased these businesses moved out-with the city centre and so today we find the Merchant City buoyant with clubs, pubs, bistros and restaurants of all kind.
The Restaurant can accommodate 135 persons on the ground floor and mezzanine and areas can be taken over by groups of 10 - 60 persons. Lunch/Pre-theatre & Sandwiches, a la Carte menus as well as a blackboard 'Fish Market Extras' are on offer. Corporate menus priced from £21.50 to £35.00 for groups or corporate dining are available on request.
We also cater for private functions, whether it be a hen party, stag do or a business meeting. Our function room caters up to 60 people and has it's own bar.
Food and Refreshment vouchers make an unusual gift. All major credit cards are accepted.
The City Merchant Loyalty Reward Scheme
We will bank 5% of what you spend. At the end of an appropriate period, say 2/3 months, we will post a Reward Voucher to you for the accumulation of the 5%. Bring this voucher along on your next visit when we will deduct the value from your bill.
There are other benefits; a complimentary bottle of our house wine on your birthday or anniversary for instance.

A optional 10% service charge is added to the total bill of parties of 6 or more after 6.30pm.
...The simple main course of grilled Dover sole showed the kitchen can get the elements of the dish right. The fish was nicely cooked and fresh, and it's melting Cafe de Paris butter, red from paprika dotted with herbs and seasonings lubricated it and made this simple dish delicious.
