| Situated 5 minutes from George Square and only a few hundred yards from Glasgow's original dwellings on the Clyde, prosperous merchants of the 17th and 18th centuries built their mansions in what is now known as the Merchant City. As time passed, they moved to the more fashionable suburbs and the west end. |

The City Fathers then developed their fish and fruit markets, and of course warehouses and manufacturing businesses prospered as well as inns and howffs - some of notorious ill-repute! As traffic congestion and noise increased these businesses moved out-with the city centre and so today we find the Merchant City buoyant with clubs, pubs, bistros and restaurants of all kind. The City Merchant Restaurant was established in 1988, by the Matteo Family, one of the first, in the Merchant City area, and was extended and upgraded in 1996, offering an exstensive variety of local and exotic fish and shellfish. |
| The City Merchant is now recognised as Glasgow's leading seafood restaurant. Clientele arrive from all airts and pairts of the world to experience the rustic Scottish ambience, warm Glasgow hospitality, fine local produce, carnivorous are also spoilt for choice, prepared by award winning chefs, in modern and traditional Scottish recipes. | ![]() |
